The Superbowl always puts me in a bad mood regardless of who’s playing! It seems like the biggest example of the message in the story about “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
I know sports fans don’t like to hear that professional sports has become HUGE because it makes so much money; and that the fans are necessary pieces of that machinery!
Professional sports has to be one of THE biggest businesses in the world. I could Google it to check, but I don’t feel like it… So, I’m basing that, on the advertising fees during the Superbowl. I’m pretty sure that there are NO cases of advertising on TV being more expensive!
I think of professional sports as a temporary high for the players and the fans. After a game’s over, no one cares all that much, unless they had a bet on a game that lost! Even so, it’s to the next game.
It seems to me that professional sports have no lasting positive effect on the average person. It used to be that good sportsmanship could influence youth, but there’s no longer a real expectation that our pro athletes are going to set a good example. If there weren’t heavy fines, it would certainly be worse.
That said, I give kudos to those players who recognize how youth look up to them and make a point of being involved in or establishing a variety of types of youth programs.
Okay. It’s entertainment. That’s GREAT. Entertainment has a LOT of value. What’s wrong is when we give it more credit than that. Because you can’t get away from it, our kids grow up idolizing professional sports and athletes far too much, instead of ALL kinds of other types of work or skills that make a long-term, positive difference.
And as much as the creative and performing arts add to our lives, they are so UNDERFUNDED and undervalued. We really do take art for granted.
If you think about the fact that you buy FOOD because you like the package, then an artist has influenced you. My point is that ART IS EVERYWHERE, but people don’t see it for what it is.
I believe is that if we had no art, music, dance, or literature (fine and performing arts) we would ALL cease to enjoy life, even people who have no idea of how much art impacts their daily lives.
ART of every kind is like therapy to the soul in so many ways. It can literally change your health if you saturate your senses with beauty and artistic forms of various kinds, like certain music for example.
Beauty and ART are necessities. They come in every imaginable shape, size, color, age and form.
Just think of how it affects your day when you don’t look nice or you look out the window and it’s a mess.
THEN, think of how wonderful it feels to lie on a beach looking at the water and the beauty of nature!
Or, focus on something that makes your SENSES come alive…a picture of a loved one, or a fun vacation…or just sitting in the park seeing lovers holding hands…and we’re just observers.
It doesn’t have to cost a dime and it can change your entire outlook AND the effect is cumulative not just short term.
I’m not saying that there’s a reason to eliminate professional sports. I just wish that we would recognize how significantly ART of all kinds impact our lives. Creativity and creation POSITIVELY IMPACT our quality of life every day. Creation (creativity) is how ALL of this got started and what keeps us moving forward…
We need people to focus on creativity and innovation of all kinds much more. THOSE will improve all of our lives AND keep our society competitive in the world.
